(LINK)

Jordan and Saudi Arabia signed MOU feasibility study will be conducted on the construction of two small modular reactors in Jordan for the production of electricity and desalinated water

Although Saudi Arabia’s nuclear program is in its infancy, the Kingdom has plans to construct 16 nuclear power reactors over the next 20 years. A 2010 royal decree identified nuclear power as essential to help meet growing energy demand for both electricity generation and water desalination, while reducing reliance on depleting hydrocarbon resources.

In September 2015, contracts were signed between KA-CARE and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to support their cooperation in developing KAERI’s SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactor). This is a 330 MWt (100 MWe) pressurised water reactor with integral steam generators and advanced safety features.

Queensland/Australia desalination plant increases production – traditional treatment plants is temporarily shut down

The Mudgeeraba water treatment plant has been temporarily shut down for critical infrastructure maintenance.

Seqwater Acting Chief Executive Officer Jim Prus, said, “This is about being smart about how we use our water grid assets in the most effective and efficient way possible.

“The desalination plant is the best option available to ensure the ongoing supply of a safe and reliable water supply while maintenance is conducted at the Mudgeeraba plant.”

The Gold Coast Desalination Plant (GCDP) will produce up to 60 million litres of drinking water per day to supply more than 170,000 residents on […]

New bill seeks to protect Israel’s marine ecology

….

Adam Teva V’Din marine management head Adv. Tammy Ganot says that preservation of the ecosystem is important not only “in the classic sense of a variety of species and nature that are important in themselves, but also for our ability to makes use of the ecosystem, the use of water for desalinization, for example. Water contaminated with oil cannot be used for desalinization, and 70% of the drinking water today is from desalinization. That means that the sea cannot be used for fishing, which harms tourism, and requires taking notice of the enormous damage that can result from […]

Santa Barbara Lifts Lawn Watering Ban as City Council Gets Update on Water Supply

Santa Barbara’s mandatory lawn watering ban has been lifted and the citywide conservation target has been reduced, thanks to heavy winter rains that significantly improved the drought-stricken water supply.

The City Council last month voted to pursue additional funding for a potential expansion of the desalination plant and a new conveyance pipeline. That vote authorized an increase in the city’s State Revolving Fund loan application to $106 million.

“With the recent rains, we are able to postpone the decision on desalination expansion and the conveyance pipeline,” Dyer said. “We aren’t pursuing any funding for the conveyance project — […]
